Turkish-German Biogas Project

Since 2008, the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) has been supporting innovative climate projects in developing and newly industrializing countries, as well as in countries in transition. Based on a decision taken by the German parliament, 120 million euros is available for use by the initiative annually, which is obtained from auctioning of CO2 emission allowances.

Through this type of cooperation, the Federal Ministry of Environment complements the existing development cooperation of the federal government. The Federal Ministry of Environment intensifies its support on the following areas:

Encouraging a climate-friendly economy (Partner countries will be supported to develop an economy structure that mitigates the generation of greenhouse gases which are harmful to the climate)
Adapting to the impacts of climate change (e.g. water resources management, improved land use, sustainable biomass production, disaster prevention measures…)
Carbon sink areas / Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) / Mitigation of Emissions Caused by Deforestation and Forest Degradation
(Supporting projects regarding the conservation of carbon sinks, especially forests and other ecosystems such as wetlands)

T.R. Ministry of Environment and Urbanization is the direct cooperation partner of the Turkish-German Biogas Project on national level. The Department for Waste Management is the project leader in this project. There is also cooperation with Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Energy and Natural Sources and Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

“The Project on Resource-efficient and climate-friendly use of animal waste for biogas production in Turkey” (short name Turkish-German Biogas Project) is executed as of October 2010 by the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the General Directorate of Environmental Management in the framework of the “Mutual Cooperation Protocol on Environment“ between the T.R. Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the German Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety.

In the scope of the Turkish-German Biogas project, biogas potential across the country was assessed in the report “Assessment of Necessary Conditions and Potential for Biogas Investments in Turkey” prepared by DBFZ – Deutsches Biomasse Forschungs Zentrum gemeinnützige GmbH in 2011.
